A talk by Utu Witchdoctor
This workshop is cancelled. Hopefully we can reschedule next year.
We are happy to announce a visit by author and founder of the Dragon Ritual Drummers "Witchdoctor Utu" who will talk to us about Voodoo, and share in the conjures of Harriet "Mama Moses" Tubman and the spirits of the Underground Railroad. The Underground and its legacy brought conjure and various spiritual practices to the north and into Canada, as the freedom seekers fled bondage. Harriet Tubman, whose track ended in St. Catharines, brought many renowned conjurers, root doctors and like Mama Moses herself, diviners.
Witchdoctor Utu will guide us in a unique hands on class and workshop on making your very own mojo bag, aka the "Mojo Hand". The mojo hand is a historic and sacred piece of American magical legacy and lore, housed originally in the south within the traditions of root work and conjure and eventually proliferating throughout the continent with the many migrations of the African American populations and their cultures. The Underground Railroad, its travelers and supporters not only brought the tradition of the mojo bag to the north but directly into Ontario as a powerful curio and magical fetish for protection, providing opportunity, luck, love and all manner of road opening magics.
In a time when proprietors and suppliers are literally filling shiny bags with crystals and calling them mojo bags, it is crucial to maintain the historic mojo hands traditional ingredients, materials and formula of which all will be provided and demonstrated, along with the sacred and profound legacy of High John the Conqueror who is the very foundation and root of the mojo hand.
Utu will have copies of his book "Conjuring Harriet 'Mama Moses' Tubman and the Spirits of the Underground Railroad" for sale and signings.
Utu lives in St. Catharines Ontario where Harriet Tubman brought her particular track of freedom to its end, and has taught the magic and conjure of the Underground Railroad at spiritual conferences and festivals across North America.
This will be a full day event with catered lunch included. Cost $80 (deposit of $20 to reserve your place. Space is limited for workshop so please register early.)
Saturday night Dr. Utu will lead us in ritual and drumming. No cost for ritual. Starts at 7 pm at the Greenwood Land Sanctuary in Martintown. (Please let us know if you are interested and check back for more details.)
